Speaker: Joe Berridge
Joe Berridge, partner at Urban Strategic Inc, will explore and lead a discussion on how the contemporary city works. By looking at some of the world’s largest and most interesting cities, the lecture will raise big questions of city financing, governance and the ambition for large-scale renewal, but also the search for the perfect place to eat, to raise a family and to enjoy city life.
An urban planner and city builder, Joe has had an integral role in the development of complex urban planning and regeneration projects in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Europe and Asia. He has been an advisor on the Ottawa 2036 Official Plan review. Joe teaches at the University of Toronto and is a Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Joe’s book ‘Perfect City’ will be published by Sutherland House in April 2019.

Mr. Langan started his advocacy career in Canadian passenger rail in 1991 when, trying to buy a CANRAIL pass at the railway station in Windsor Ontario, he was told by VIA Rail that Canadians could not buy the pass. After successfully fighting VIA Rail in federal court, VIA was forced to offer the pass to Canadians. This began Mr. Langan’s passion to improve passenger rail in Canada.
In 2008, Mr. Langan started the advocacy group High Speed Rail Canada to educate Canadians on high speed rail in Canada. It is acknowledged that High Speed Rail Canada is the single national resource on high speed rail information in Canada. Mr. Langan provided an entertaining presentation and discussion on the past, present and future as it relates to the possibility of high speed rail in Canada.

We heard from Moura Quayle, the author of Designed Leadership, and strategic-design scholar and urban-systems designer, who shared her plan for integrating design and leadership, translating processes, principles and practices from years of experience into tools of change for all levels of leaders. She has shared her ideas with a variety of groups over the past year: RBC Leaders Within and RBC Executive, Public Servants from South Korea, Build Ex Calgary, Vancouver Dental Education, Interface Health and other academic audiences.
Professor Moura Quayle is the Director pro tem of the new UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. Since 2014, Moura was the Director of the Liu Institute for Global Issues and the Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs professional graduate program. She has brought her education and professional background in urban design and landscape architecture to bear on a variety of leadership positions.
