A subway under downtown in 1915?  A major freeway under Laurier Avenue? A hexagonal city grid?  A hockey arena beyond the suburban fringe?  Join renowned capital planning historian and former Ottawa resident David Gordon as he takes us for an illustrated tour through the past of planning and design in Canada’s Capital.  Hear about which planning and urban design decisions went right and which ones were failures, as well as the missed opportunities and projects that thankfully were never built.

Peter Katz, Planning Director, Arlington County, Virginia; author; consultant

Peter Katz is a key founder of New Urbanism, a movement that takes the good aspects from the old cities we love – walkability, density, mix of uses, and even the front porch – and melds them into today’s cities.

Join Peter, as he reflects on the evolution of New Urbanism beyond its design and environmental roots. Peter’s discussion will demonstrate that New Urbanist mixed-use neighbourhoods not only satisfy our desires for communities with a good quality of life, but also generate sustainable municipal finances.
